What to Consider When Buying a Vacation Home

So you want to buy a vacation home? You aren’t alone. The thought of never touching a germ-ridden remote or ancient hotel carpet again is extremely appealing.

There are many things to consider before purchasing a vacation home, and here are a few of them!

Set a realistic budget.
Setting a budget goes beyond what you can afford for a home outright. Much like the purchase of any home, you have to think about maintenance and upkeep, insurance, HOAs, property taxes, furnishings, and last but not least, the necessary items to enjoy said home (jet skis, surfboards, waterboards, etc), just to name a few.

Location, location, location!
What will be your primary use? How will you get there? Is it for annual family vacations, or quarterly? Or in some cases, it may just be a couple of hours away and you might have the opportunity to get there monthly. No matter the frequency, it’s important to purchase in a location that you love. After all, you don’t want to be stressed out during your vacations by obnoxious neighbors or noisy communities.

It needs to fit your family.
Sure, a one-bedroom cabin in the remote woods may seem appealing, but do you plan on expanding your family? How long is the drive? A 3-hour mountain road trek may be scenic and beautiful, but add a baby and a toddler into the mix and you might have a recipe for disaster.
